Team Europe handed the US Team most convincing defeat Sunday as they hand the US team an 18 1/2 – 9 1/2 victory. That victory matched the blow out dealt to the US team in 2004 where the Europeans were victorious in convincing fashion.
The victory came with a few quirks though. Tiger Woods, who played magnificent;y during his matches was on the seventh green, just beyond the water when his caddie, Steve Williams decided to wash his 9 iron in the pond just shy of where the two were standing. Steve slipped and in went his 9 iron. The amusing thing was Williams looked back at Woods in a way that seemed as though Wiliams was just brushing off what happened. You just dropped the number one players 9 iron in the water!
Woods appeared to shrug it off and laugh a bit, which was all they could do. A diver later retrieved the club and returned it to it’s rightful owner on number 15.
Also interesting on the final day was the fact that the European team could have won in record fashion, breaking their 2004 mark. However in what would become a deciding gentlemenly gesture, Paul McGinley gave American J.J. Henry a 25 foot putt on the 18th hole which allowed the Americans an extra half point.
Although there was still players out on the course, the European team had the cup won and McGinley thought it the right thing to do. He probably will be getting some crap for that but that doesn’t erase the fact that those guys spanked the Americans.
